| Frequently Asked Questions |
| |
| |
| What can I expect when I arrive?
|
| |
| When you enter Yogabhavan, you
will immediately feel at home. With one wall of
windows, the center gets plenty of natural light,
and the beautiful alter creates a sacred space
by which to practice and meditate. All the classes
are tailored to the abilities and characters of
the students in order that they may maximally
benefit from their yoga experience. The center
provides racks for people to remove their shoes,
and a changing room and restroom are easily accessible.
Come a few minutes early your first class so that
you can fill out a waiver and make yourself at
ease. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing that
you can move around in. It is likely that you
will work up a sweat, so bring a change of clothing
if you will feel uncomfortable. Cell phones should
be turned off during the class. |

| What are the benefits of Yoga?
|
| |
| While the physical benefits of
Yoga are most often emphasized, such as improved
health, flexibility, and strength, Yoga is traditionally
practiced for its mental and spiritual benefits.
Over the centuries, people have not only received
greater relaxation, peace of mind, patience, and
mental balance, but also have reached the goal
of human life, union with the divine. |
| |
| What style of Yoga is taught?
|
| |
|
| International Gurukulam and Yogabhavans
were created to preserve ancient and modern Yogic practices.
Classes are based on Gurukula Yoga which acts at the deeper level, returning each
person to a state of childlike innocence. Gurukula Yoga
does not work only at the physical level, but harmonizes
the mental, emotional and spiritual levels to reconnect
the small self to the universal Self. Students practice
a challenging series of asanas or postures, breathing,
and different techniques for developing concentration,
which leads to meditation. |
| |
| Is Yoga a religion? |
| |
| Yoga is not a religion, but a science.
Through a set of prescribed steps, students can realize
their aspirations. |
| |
| What if I have an injury? |
| |
| Students should inform their teacher
of any injuries that they may have prior to class. If
pain is felt at any time, students should stop what
they are doing and continue only when they feel comfortable.
Students with special conditions should consult a doctor
prior to taking class. |
| |
| Do I have to be a vegetarian to practice
Yoga? |
| |
| In order to receive the full benefits
and, a vegetarian diet and a balanced lifestyle, free
from any type of intoxicants, should be maintained.
If observances are not kept, students should refrain
from practicing headstand. |
| |
| If I am menstruating, can I practice
Yoga? |
| |
| Menstruation purifies the body and removes
toxins in the blood. It is normal to feel tired during
this time, and adequate rest should be taken. It is
especially important that no inversions are done as
this reverses the natural direction of the energy flow
during this time. |
| |
| Can I practice Yoga if I am pregnant?
|
| |
| While it is best if Yoga has been practiced
on an ongoing basis prior to pregnancy, Yoga can also
be safely taken up and practiced during pregnancy. However,
there are many postures that should be avoided, and
therefore, it is recommended to take a prenatal class. |
