Srivatsa Ramaswami is a well known yoga teacher from Chennai, India. For 33 years, Ramaswami was a student of Pandit Sri T. Krishnamacharya (1888-1989), the scholar and teacher of such luminaries as B.K.S.Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and Indra Devi. Under the guidance of his mentor, Ramaswami studied Vinyasa Krama, Pranayama, meditation, Vedic chanting, and important Yoga-related
texts like the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. He has taught Yoga for more than 25 years in India (Kalakshetra, Ramachandra Medical University, and Yoga Brotherhood), as well as in the US (Esalen Institute, Loyola Marymount University, Yoga Works, Himalayan Institute, Chicago Yoga Center and several others). Ramaswami has used yoga as therapy for a wide range of health challenges all over the world. He is the author of four books and has recorded 40 audiocassettes and CDs. Srivatsa Ramaswami is the author of one of the best selling yoga books, The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga (New York: Marlowe & Company, 2005). In this work, Ramaswami presents the most complete introduction to Vinyasa Krama Yoga
as a sequence of several postures that use the breath as a harness. The book has more than 900 asanas and their variations and is beautifully illustrated; it also includes an audio CD with some Sanskrit chants and a complete recitation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Ramaswami is also the author of two other important books. In Yoga for the Three Stages of Life (Rochester, Vermont: Inner Traditions, 2000), he offers an excellent summary of yoga philosophy that serves as a background for developing the idea that it is important to adapt a yoga practice according to the individual needs and stages of life. Ramaswami and his wife, Dr. Uma Ramaswami, a gynaecologist, are working on the preparation of a new book tentatively titled Yoga for the Internal Organs.
