Class Descriptions

All classes are on a drop-in basis, except kids/teens, mom/child, advanced classes and prenatal classes. Classes are based on Vishwa Yoga, meaning universal union. Vishwa Yoga works to harmonize the physical, mental, and spiritual levels to increase balance, strength, flexibility, health, energy, and happiness.

Basic

Students new to Yoga, new to International Gurukulam Vishwa Yoga, or those who want to cultivate a more gentle practice will love this class. Positions are explained along with precautions and benefits.

Mixed

Level Students should have a basic knowledge of fundamentals. The class is suited to all levels and is a carefully designed sequence of poses, breathing, and meditation based on International Gurukulam Vishwa Yoga and tailored to the level of the class. The class demands focus and generates mental balance, energy, strength, and flexibility.

Intermediate/Advanced

Students should be ready for a vigorous class with an increased number of variations that build upon the open class. Students should be ready to work more with balancing poses, lotus position, and inversions.

Purification

This class includes powerful techniques for purifying the mind and body. Students focus on movement, breathing, chanting, and meditation. For dedicated students and teachers only.

Prenatal

Moms to be are welcome to this class, which allows Yoga practice to be continued safely throughout pregnancy. All trimesters are welcome.

Baby & Me

Caretakers and pre-walkers are welcome to this unique bonding experience. Practice Yoga with your baby while enjoying the freedom to nurse, change diapers, or adjust your practice as necessary, and meet other likeminded folks.

Family

Share the wonderful benefits of this ancient practice together, strengthening your family bonds and forming habits that last a lifetime.

Music Class

This class taught by Smt. Nivedita Shivraj, an internationally acclaimed carnatic singer and veena player, teaches the basics of carnatic music and bhajan chanting, and is open to all ages.

Check here for more information on classes for the whole family.

Kids/Teens Ages 6 & up

This is the best time to learn the basics of Yoga and how to control your body and focus your mind. A must for growing up in NYC! Kids will develop balance and improve confidence, strength, flexibility, concentration, and peace of mind.

Privates

Must be reserved in advance. Deepen your practice and speed up your progress. Partners are also welcome

Meditation & Chanting

In order to advance in Yoga, one must move beyond the physical level. Chanting & Meditation are essential for purifying the mind and emotions, shrinking the ego, and achieving lasting mental peace (not pieces!). Pranayama, exercises to control the vital energy, are also included to focus the mind and enhance concentration.
Satsang

Satsangs are held on a monthly basis. Participants join for a guided group meditation, chanting and music, and a talk about yoga. The satsang is closed with prayers for peace, and the distribution of Prasad (sweets). All religions are honored, and people from all faiths are welcome.
